Omaha’s largest remaining World War I monument – the World War Veterans Memorial in Turner Park – is undergoing an extensive restoration. McGill Restoration Inc. of Omaha volunteered to restore the monument at the corner of Farnam Street and Turner Boulevard to its original beauty.
Work began Monday and is expected to take two weeks and 300 man-hours. The project will be completed before the “Celebration of American Spirit,” an event that will be held in the park to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The Omaha chapter of American War Mothers financed the memorial, which was dedicated in 1937. It was last restored in 1994.
Restoration will include stone and brick replacement and repair, mortar work and cleaning. The monument also will be waterproofed to inhibit weathering.
